Verbeterde methode in strijd tegen verzilting

Stroomt er in de toekomst zout water uit onze kraan? Droge zomers en een stijgende zeewaterspiegel maken van verzilting een urgent probleem. Bovendien maakt het hoge waterverbruik in Vlaanderen, door onze intensieve landbouw en grote bevolkingsdichtheid, het probleem nog ernstiger. We moeten Vlaanderen en andere kustgebieden in de wereld beter wapenen tegen deze dreigende verzilting. Daarom hebben we nood aan een efficiënte en betaalbare manier om het ondergrondse zoutwater in kaart te brengen.

 

Gezonde grondwaterstand

Onze samenleving is sterk afhankelijk van grondwater voor drinkwater en landbouw. Het is daarom van vitaal belang om de dynamiek achter het grondwater te begrijpen. Het wordt door tal van omgevingsfactoren beïnvloed, zoals neerslag of de aanwezigheid van de ondergrondse kleilaag in de polders die insijpelend regenwater tegenhoudt. Oppompen van grondwater verstoort het evenwicht in de grondwatertafel. Als er te veel water wordt opgepompt, dringt zeewater via de ondergrond in onze aardlagen. Bij extreme droogte kan dit zoutwater in onze rivieren terecht komen, waardoor het aan de oppervlakte komt. Dat is de reden van het (tegenwoordig jaarlijkse) oppompverbod voor landbouwers, want deze verzilting heeft dan weer nare, langdurige gevolgen voor onze landbouwgrond en drinkwaterproductie. Net zoals een MRI-scan of röntgenfoto de (on)gezondheid van een persoon toont, hebben we een grondwaterscan nodig die de verzilting in kaart brengt. Op basis daarvan kan preciezer en veiliger worden bepaald wanneer een oppompverbod moet worden uitgevaardigd.

 

Van meting tot interpretatie

Strandzoekers gaan met een metaaldetector op zoek naar muntjes en andere kleine schatten. Op eenzelfde manier gaan wetenschappers op zoek naar zoutwater. Via een geavanceerde, door een helikopter gedragen metaaldetector, wordt een elektromagnetisch veld uitgestuurd, dat op zijn beurt elektrische stroompjes teweegbrengt in de onderliggende aardlagen. De sterkte van de stroompjes wordt bovengronds opgemeten en via de fysische theorie van elektromagnetisme worden deze stroompjes gerelateerd aan de eigenschappen van de aardlagen. Zoutwater reageert namelijk op een gelijkaardige manier als metaal: het geleidt de stroom beter dan zoetwater, en juist deze geleidbaarheid wordt opgemeten. Door gebruik te maken van een helikopter wordt een groot oppervlak snel opgemeten.

Na het verzamelen van de data, wordt een hele procedure doorlopen om tot de ondergrondse structuur te komen. Via de huidige metingen hebben we eigenlijk niet genoeg informatie om de volledige structuur van de aardlagen gedetailleerd voor te stellen. Bovendien zijn er meetfouten door de beperkingen van de apparatuur, waardoor de procedure nog uitdagender wordt. Het resultaat is vaak een ongestructureerde combinatie van zoet, zout en brak water, terwijl we verschillende lagen water met verschillend zoutgehalte verwachten. Kunt u de typische doorsnede van de lagen in een kuststreek herkennen?

In de eerste figuur vind je een ondergrond die volledig brak is. Dit is een te simplistische voorstelling van de ondergrondse structuur. In de tweede figuur vind je vijf verschillende lagen met een ander zoutgehalte. De laatste figuur is onrealistisch, maar kan toch de uitkomst van de huidige procedure zijn. Dit komt nu net door het tekort aan informatie. De data die met de geavanceerde metaaldetector zou worden opgemeten boven die derde doorsnede (fig. 2.3) zou kunnen overeenkomen met de opgemeten data boven de tweede figuur (fig. 2.2). Zo zijn er gigantisch veel uitkomsten bij dezelfde data!

We lossen dit probleem op door de procedure aan te passen. Door een extra voorwaarde op de oplossing in te voeren, filteren we de onrealistische oplossingen eruit. De huidige methodes eisen een smooth of “gladde” uitkomst, daardoor verminderen we het aantal plotse sprongen in de uitkomst, zoals in figuur 3. De interpretatie van dergelijke smooth figuren is moeilijk, omdat er in echte ondergronden vaak sprongen zijn: je hebt een plotse overgang van zoet naar zout.

 

In mijn onderzoek gebruikte ik wavelettheorie, een wiskundige theorie, ontwikkeld door de Belgische Ingrid Daubechies. Deze laat toe om zowel een harde als zachte grens tussen zout en zoet water te vinden. Het idee is als volgt: Op voorhand kiezen we een bepaald bouwblokje, met zachte en/of harde grenzen. Alle bouwblokjes hebben dezelfde vorm, maar zijn er in allerlei maten. Dan eisen we dat de uitkomst met zo min mogelijk bouwblokjes wordt gebouwd. Bijgevolg komt figuur 2.3 niet meer in aanmerking, want voor alle details in de figuur zijn veel kleine blokjes nodig. Met deze verbeterde methodologie kunnen experten op een preciezere manier de waterscan interpreteren.

 

Besluit

Het is van cruciaal belang om de grondwaterstanden te inspecteren, zodat we ons waterbeleid erop kunnen afstemmen. Zeker in de context van de klimaatveranderingen, waar bovendien de mens het evenwicht tussen zout en zoet grondwater grondig kan verstoren. Met deze verbeterde methode kan een nauwkeuriger beeld gevormd worden van het zout in ons grondwater. Dit kan dienen als noodzakelijke input voor onze beleidsmakers.
