Holocene Vegetation Reconstruction of the Zwarte Beek Catchment, Campine Area (Belgium). A Pollen-based and Multivariate Statistical Approach

Het diepe verleden van de vallei van de Zwarte Beek: duizenden jaren geschiedenis geschreven in het veen

Als we de natuur willen beschermen, moeten we niet alleen verdere ontbossingen en andere bedreigingen voorkomen, maar ook de impact van de mens uit de vorige decennia ongedaan maken. Allemaal goed en wel, maar is dat voldoende? Wat gebeurde er daarvoor, in het verre verleden?

Bij natuurbescherming wordt er vaak gestreefd naar het behouden of herstellen van een toestand op een moment in het verleden. Dit baseline-scenario stelt de ongerepte toestand van de natuur voor, toen menselijke verstoringen nog afwezig waren. Maar de natuur is natuurlijk complexer dan dat. Ook zonder invloed van de mens verandert bijvoorbeeld het klimaat: denk maar aan de afwisseling van glaciale en interglaciale periodes die al enkele miljoenen jaren aan de gang is. Ook het landschap zelf verandert, bodems vormen en eroderen, vegetatie gaat van nature over van de ene samenstelling in de andere. Het is dan ook achterhaald om natuur als iets statisch te beschouwen, met één bepaalde optimale toestand die we terug moeten proberen te krijgen. Natuur is dynamisch, en om haar te begrijpen, heb je tijd nodig: hoe meer tijd, hoe meer inzicht je krijgt in de dynamische natuur van -welja- de natuur.

Fossieltjes in veen

In dit onderzoek probeerde ik beter te begrijpen hoe de vegetatie in de vallei van de Zwarte Beek, aan de rand van het Kempens Plateau, veranderde over de laatste duizenden jaren. Hiervoor bekeek ik stuifmeelkorrels, ook wel pollen genoemd, die als microscopisch kleine fossielen in het veen van de Zwarte Beek-vallei zijn bewaard. Veen is een soort grond die ontstaat doordat plantenmateriaal opstapelt bij omstandigheden met weinig zuurstof, zodat afbraak wordt verhinderd. Het vormt een uniek archief dat resten uit het verre verleden kan bewaren, waaronder fossiele pollen. Doorheen de tijd wordt er altijd een beetje plantenmateriaal bovenaan toegevoegd: hoe dieper je dus in het veen kijkt, hoe verder je terug gaat in de tijd. Het veen dat ik onderzocht was meer dan drie meter dik, en onderaan ongeveer elfduizend jaar oud.

Een oud perspectief

Als we natuurgebieden zoals de vallei van de Zwarte Beek goed willen beheren, is het belangrijk om te begrijpen hoe ze werken, en hoe ze zullen reageren op toekomstige klimaatsveranderingen en ingrepen door de mens. In dit onderzoek werd niet enkel naar de vegetatie gekeken, maar ook naar andere factoren zoals klimaat, ondergrond, hydrologie en activiteiten van de mens, en dit over een heel lange tijdsschaal. Zo proberen we ons inzicht in dit ecosysteem te verbeteren. Dat is ook van belang bij het inschatten van de nodige maatregelen om gewenste ecosysteemdiensten te verbeteren, zoals het voorkomen van overstromingen, de opslag van koolstof, het behoud van soortendiversiteit… De afgelopen duizenden jaren hebben menselijke activiteiten zoals ontbossing en landbouw de natuurlijke vegetatie sterk veranderd, een daarom is een lange termijn perspectief op deze ecosystemen erg belangrijk.

Reis door de tijd

Stuifmeel kan worden gebruikt als een hulpmiddel om vroegere vegetatie-samenstellingen op te helderen, omdat verschillende planten deze korrels maken in verschillende vormen. De oudste pollenkorrels die werden gevonden in de bestudeerde veenkern uit Zwarte Beek, wezen op een open vegetatie bestaande uit voornamelijk grassen en struiken. Toen het klimaat na de laatste ijstijd begon te verbeteren, toonden de pollen dat er een naaldbos werd gevormd. Vanaf ongeveer 9800 jaar geleden, toen het klimaat geschikt was, arriveerden ook gematigde boomsoorten in het Kempengebied en vormden een loofbos. De natte valleien, aanvankelijk gedomineerd door cypergrassen, werden bebost met elzenbroekbossen rond 8500 jaar geleden. In een volgende stap, vanaf 7800 jaar geleden, werden de bossen van het Kempengebied opener en werden grassen en heide talrijker. In het veen werd nu ook meer houtskool gevonden, wat wijst op een toename van branden. Het is mogelijk dat jager-verzamelaars deze vuren met opzet aanstaken als hulpmiddel bij de jacht en dat zij dus verantwoordelijk waren voor de gedeeltelijke opening van de Kempense bossen in deze periode.

Verdwenen veen

Er is geen veen gevonden dat past in het tijdsinterval van 6700 jaar geleden tot de middeleeuwen. Hiervoor zijn meerdere verklaringen mogelijk: Veranderden de milieuomstandigheden, zodat veenvorming stopte? Het is ook mogelijk dat de veengroei verderging, maar het bovenste veen later is verwijderd. In recentere perioden werden afvoerkanalen aangelegd in de vallei, om het gebied beter geschikt te maken voor landbouwactiviteiten. Maar wanneer veen niet langer onder water staat, begint het af te breken en kan het verloren gaan. Een laatste en meest waarschijnlijke verklaring voor het afwezige veen, zijn veenontginningen. Na het drogen van uitgegraven blokken veen, ontstaat een materiaal bekend als turf. In de afgelopen eeuwen werd turf vaak gebruikt als brandstof en turfoogst vond plaats over heel Vlaanderen en werd in historische bronnen ook gemeld in de Zwarte Beek-vallei.

Na dit tijdsinterval zonder overgebleven veen, wezen de pollen aan de bovenkant van de veenkern op een sterke ontbossing tijdens de afgelopen eeuwen. Gras werd overvloedig en er werden ook graanpollen gevonden, waaruit bleek dat landbouwactiviteiten nu ook voorkwamen in het Zwarte Beek-gebied.

Uit dit onderzoek naar de vegetatiegeschiedenis van Zwarte Beek-vallei vloeien enkele richtlijnen voort waarmee het natuurbeheer in het studiegebied kan worden geoptimaliseerd. Belangrijk is dat afvoerkanalen in de vallei worden verwijderd om veenafbraak te voorkomen, dat de diverse moerasvegetatie wordt behouden en dat de loofbosbedekking in de bredere omgeving wordt uitgebreid. De vallei was vroeger bevochtigd door een diffuus netwerk van kleine stroompjes, terwijl de huidige meanderende rivier waarschijnlijk vrij recent ontstond, gelinkt aan ontbossingen. Er moet dan ook kritisch omgesprongen worden met ingrepen zoals hermeandering van riviersegmenten in de vallei.
