De nieuwe “surf & turf”: het effect van krabbenafval op slagroei
Vindt u het ook belangrijk om gezond te eten en voor onze planeet te zorgen? Dan bent u niet de enige. In onze maatschappij nemen gezondheid en het milieu een belangrijke plaats in. We vergeten echter dat de manier waarop wij momenteel ‘gezonde’ voeding verkrijgen helemaal niet zo gezond en al zeker niet milieuvriendelijk is.

De link tussen kunstmeststoffen en voedselproductie
In de groententeelt wordt nu vaak gebruikgemaakt van kunstmeststoffen. De productie heeft echter een grote CO2-voetafdruk. Daarnaast kan de overgebleven aarde na de oogst moeilijk hergebruikt worden. Hierdoor worden kunstmeststoffen bestempeld als niet-hernieuwbare materialen. Nochtans bevatten deze meststoffen vele voedingsstoffen, zoals bijvoorbeeld stikstof, die nodig zijn om de voedselproductie te behouden.
Om de milieu- en klimaatimpact van onze land- en tuinbouw te minimaliseren is het dus belangrijk dat er gezocht wordt naar hernieuwbare oplossingen. Een logische eerste denkrichting is kijken naar opties die de natuur zelf kan bieden.
Krabbenafval en het ondergrondse leven
Jaarlijks wordt 70 000 ton schaaldierafval “geproduceerd” in het 2-zeëengebied tussen België, Nederland, Frankrijk en Groot-Brittannië. Een groot deel wordt ongebruikt geloosd. Dit zorgt onder andere door de hoge bederfelijkheid voor nadelige effecten op de kust- en mariene milieus.
De schaal van schaaldieren, zoals krabben, is voornamelijk opgebouwd uit chitine. Chitine is van nature rijk aan stikstof. Het toevoegen van chitine aan potgrond zou dus deze bouwsteen kunnen leveren aan de planten. De uitdaging is echter dat chitine moet worden afgebroken als we willen dat stikstof vrijkomt en dus opgenomen kan worden door de plant.
Dit stelt ons voor de volgende vraag: biedt de natuur ook de mogelijkheid om chitine af te breken? Een antwoord is misschien te vinden in de ondergrondse wereld van bacteriën en schimmels. Er zijn namelijk al bodemlevende micro-organismen bekend die positieve effecten hebben op de plantengroei.
Van afvalstroom tot hernieuwbaar materiaal
Het Europese Horti-BlueC project heeft de ambitie om lokale afvalstromen uit de land- en tuinbouw, agro-, voedings- en visserijsector om te vormen tot hernieuwbare materialen.
In functie van dit project werden slaplantjes gekweekt in zuivere potgrond of in potgrond met 2% uit krabbenschalen opgezuiverde chitine.
Slaplanten zijn hierbij de ideale testcase omdat hun wortelstelsel in verhouding tot het bladoppervlak zwak ontwikkeld is. Voor een goede groei moeten de voedingsstoffen in de bodem daarom makkelijk beschikbaar zijn.
Vier en zeven weken na de start van het experiment werd de groei van de planten en hun wortels gemeten. Om te checken of er wel degelijk stikstof werd vrijgesteld, onderzochten we de hoeveelheid voedingsstoffen in zowel de plantenbladeren als de potgrond door middel van chemische analyses.
Uiteraard waren we ook nieuwsgierig naar de bacteriën en schimmels in de potgrond.
Op alle potten met krabbenafval verscheen er een witte korst. Deze korst vormde het startpunt om de mogelijks aanwezige micro-organismen te onderzoeken.
Proefopzet
De magie van de natuur
Planten nemen hun voedingsstoffen voornamelijk op via hun wortels. Bij grotere planten worden dus grotere wortels verwacht. Toch zorgde het toevoegen van chitine voor een opvallende andere conclusie.
De planten die in potgrond met chitine groeiden waren na 7 weken duidelijk groter dan de planten die groeiden in zuivere potgrond. Hun wortels gaven daarentegen het omgekeerde beeld. De meest ontwikkelde wortels werden teruggevonden bij de kleinere planten.

Hoe kunnen we dit dan verklaren?
De aanwezigheid van chitine in krabbenafval vergroot de concentratie van voedingsstoffen, waaronder de stikstofconcentratie, in de potgrond. Door deze toename kan de plant de nodige bouwstenen makkelijker opnemen. Hierdoor moet er waarschijnlijk minder geïnvesteerd worden in wortelgroei. De uitgespaarde energie vertaalt zich vervolgens in een stijgende plantengroei.
Toevoeging van krabbenafval zorgt dus voor meer voedingsstoffen, wat op zijn beurt zorgt voor kleinere wortels en grotere planten, maar hoe worden deze voedingsstoffen vrijgesteld?
Daarvoor moeten we naar de ondergrondse samenleving kijken.
Uit de analyses van de witte korst blijkt Mortierella, een typische bodemschimmel, sterk te stijgen in hoeveelheid door de chitine in de potgrondmengsels. Het is al bekend dat ze de groei van Arabidopsis, een kruidachtige plantensoort, stimuleert. Daarnaast kunnen sommige soorten van Mortierella chitine afbreken.
Deze schimmel zal dus misschien op twee manieren een belangrijke rol kunnen spelen bij de verbeterde slagroei.
Krabbenafval gebruiken in de slateelt: een goed idee!
Biedt krabbenafval een alternatief naar milieuvriendelijkere landbouw? Ja, we creëren namelijk een win-winsituatie door natuurlijk afval zoals krabbenschalen te gebruiken om extra voedingsstoffen aan te leveren voor de planten.
De hoeveelheid krabbenafval in de oceanen vermindert en het aandeel chemisch geproduceerde meststoffen in de landbouw wordt teruggeschroefd.
Het gevolg? Milieuvriendelijkere afvalverwerking en lagere klimaatbelasting van de landbouw. Met als laatste pluspunt: gezondere voeding die minder chemische residuen bevat!
