Invloed van reële winststuring op de mate van cash holdings in Europa

Doelmatige sturing van de winst zorgt voor minder aanhouden van cash

Het verband tussen winststuring en de cash holding  van een onderneming, wordt in dit onderzoek in een ander daglicht geplaatst. In het onderzoek vanuit KU Leuven wordt een negatief verband gevonden tussen de acties die managers ondernemen om een hogere winst te noteren en de hoeveelheid cash die aangehouden wordt binnen deze onderneming. Hierbij stellen de ondernomen acties veranderingen in de daadwerkelijke activiteit van de onderneming voor. Hiernaast wordt ook gevonden dat er een verschil bestaat in dit effect binnenin Europa. Dankzij dit onderzoek wordt het zakendoen binnen Europa voor een deel gewijzigd.

Over KU Leuven

KU Leuven is een universiteit die verspreid is over tien steden in Vlaanderen. De opleidingen zijn verdeeld over drie groepen, namelijk Humane wetenschappen, Wetenschap en Technologie en Biomedische wetenschappen. Dit onderzoek vond plaats aan de Faculteit voor Economie en Bedrijfswetenschappen in Antwerpen.

Bevindingen onderzoek

In dit onderzoek werd nagegaan of de eerdere bevindingen van de link tussen het doelmatig winstverhogen en het aanhouden van cash eveneens geldig is voor ondernemingen binnen Europa. Dit blijkt niet het geval te zijn. Binnen Europa zal het doelmatig omhoog brengen van de winst voor een lagere hoeveelheid aangehouden cash zorgen.

In het onderzochte effect valt eveneens een verschil op te merken doorheen de onderzochte landen. Er wordt een onderscheid gemaakt tussen vier rechtsstelsels, namelijk het Frans, Duits en Scandinavisch continentaal recht en het systeem van common law. Tot het Frans continentaal rechtsstelsel behoren Frankrijk, België, Nederland, Luxemburg, Italië, Spanje, Griekenland en Portugal. Het Duits continentaal rechtsstelsel bevat de landen Duitsland, Oostenrijk en Zwitserland. Het Scandinavisch continentaal rechtsstelstel bestaat uit de landen Denemarken, Finland, Noorwegen en Zweden. Het systeem van common law wordt in dit onderzoek vertegenwoordigd door Groot-Brittannië. Het onderzoekt stelt dat bij een zelfde mate in sturing van de winst aan de hand van activiteiten in de onderneming, er minder cash zal aangehouden worden door ondernemingen die zich in landen bevinden die tot het Duits of Scandinavisch continentaal rechtsstelsel behoren in vergelijking met ondernemingen in het Frans continentaal recht. Er wordt geen verschil gevonden tussen ondernemingen die tot één van de landen binnen het continentaal recht behoren en ondernemingen uit het systeem van common law.

Wat verandert er?

De resultaten van dit onderzoek schijnen een ander licht op de samenwerking met ondernemingen in Europa. Doordat managers de activiteiten van de onderneming aanpassen, zullen de gepubliceerde boekhoudkundige cijfers eveneens wijzigen. Deze cijfers geven op deze manier niet de correcte financiële situatie weer. In geval van overnames, samenwerkingsverbanden en aandeelhoudersbeslissingen zal dus moeten nagegaan worden of er aan winststuring wordt gedaan in de onderneming alvorens een passend contract aangegaan kan worden.
