Leeft de Vlaming van morgen slimmer dankzij Internet of Things?

Heb jij ze al eens gezien: de bekende filmpjes waarin slimme technologie onze levens van morgen compleet verandert? De filmpjes tonen al een tiental jaar een koelkast die automatisch melk bijbestelt in de winkel of een slim beveiligingssysteem dat jouw huis in de gaten houdt tijdens jouw afwezigheid. Enkel maar voordelen! Of toch niet? Vandaag prijzen gelijkaardige video’s nog steeds het innovatieve leven van morgen aan dat ons huidig leven al had kunnen zijn.

Internet of Things in een notendop

Laten we beginnen bij het begin: wat is nu Internet of Things (IoT)? De term werd in 1999 allereerst gebruikt door technologie pionier Kevin Ashton, die het RFID-label (Radio-Frequency Identification) hielp ontwikkelen. Het RFID-label communiceert door middel van radiogolven de informatie die het bevat. Je kleeft zo’n label op een voorwerp, en klaar! Het voorwerp kan nu als het ware ‘communiceren’. Dit was het begin van wat Ashton beschreef als Internet of Things: “... een wereld waar het internet met de fysieke wereld verbonden is door middel van sensoren”. Met andere woorden: een wereld vol slimme, verbonden voorwerpen.

Ashton’s wereld groeide intussen sterk aan. In 2017 waren alvast 8,38 miljard Internet of Things toestellen in gebruik (1), met een voorspelde groei tot 12 miljard toestellen in jaar 2020. Twee grote trends drijven deze groei.  Miniaturisatie van steeds slimmere elektronica en betere connectiviteit door alomtegenwoordig wifi en mobiel internet bieden eindeloos mogelijkheden.  Toch bestellen we nog steeds zelf onze melk of vragen we aan de buren om thuis een oogje in het zeil te houden. De voorziene revolutie uit de filmpjes maakt plaats voor een geleidelijke evolutie. Waarom laat de consument de voordelen van Internet of Things links liggen? Potentiële nadelen.

Drivers, barrières en het adoptiemodel

Elke nieuwe (r)evolutie, van een simpele smartphone tot volledige sociaal systeem, heeft zowel drivers als barrières. Waar de drivers de verspreiding van een innovatie versnellen, kunnen barrières nieuwigheden net tegenhouden. Enkele voorbeelden. Zo zorgden de overduidelijke voordelen van de LED-lamp ervoor dat Europese overheid de verkoop van milieuonvriendelijke tegenhanger, namelijk de gloeilamp, zelfs volledig verbood vanaf 2009 (2). Aan de andere kan van het spectrum bevindt zich bijvoorbeeld de elektrische auto. De voordelen voor het milieu en de lage gebruikskost wegen niet op tegen de hoge aankoopkost, het gebrek aan oplaadinfrastructuur en de beperkte reikwijdte (3). Bijgevolg bedraagt het aandeel elektrische auto’s in België slechts 0,11% (4) ondanks een aankooppremie.

Het belang van drivers en barrières maakt een duidelijk overzicht bijgevolg geen overbodige luxe. Daarom brengt onderzoek deze factoren zo goed mogelijk in kaart. Onderzoekers bundelen alle relevante drivers en barrières voor een bepaald product in wat heet een ‘adoptiemodel’. Dat adoptiemodel biedt ontwikkelaars en beleidsmakers een leidraad voor respectievelijk toekomstig onderzoek en beleidsplannen.

Nieuw onderzoek

Internet of Things is in dit opzicht geen uitzondering. Onderzoek naar een adoptiemodel is hoognodig wil de maatschappij Internet of Things ten volle gaan benutten. Nieuw onderzoek door Bram Guldentops, alumni aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, wil de aanzet geven voor de tocht naar een algemeen adoptiemodel. Guldentops voerde hiervoor een steekproef uit in Vlaanderen door middel van een online vragenlijst (n = 419). Voor de bouw van het model startte Guldentops bij bestaande adoptiemodellen voor technologie in het algemeen en baseerde hij zich op eigen ervaring uit voorgaand werk.

De demografische verdeling van de steekproef

Het voorgestelde model bestaat uit vijf zaken die de adoptiesnelheid van Internet of Things beïnvloeden. De vijf factoren slagen erin om voor 96.8% de mate van adoptie te verklaren (R2= .968, F(5,413)= 2489.626, p< .001). Als eerste heeft het waargenomen nut dat de consument ervaart bij het gebruik van IoT een invloed op de adoptie. Daarnaast speelden ook het waargenomen gebruiksgemak en het waargenomen plezier bij het gebruik van IoT een significante rol. Sociale beïnvloeding, bijvoorbeeld een goede vriend die Internet of Things aanraadt, bleek ook van belang. Tot slot had ook al dan niet vrijwillig gebruik van IoT een invloed op de effectieve adoptie ervan.

Het adoptiemodel rond Internet of Things voor de Vlaamse consument

Guldentops onderzocht ook het belang van twee nieuwere items, namelijk waargenomen risico en interoperabiliteit. De cijfers gaven sterke aanwijzingen dat het waargenomen risico bij het gebruik van Internet of Things ook de adoptie kan beïnvloeden. Verder onderzoek moet uitwijzen of, en zo ja op welke manier, het waargenomen risico in het adoptiemodel voor Internet of Things past. Interoperabiliteit geeft de mate aan waarin een toestel in de levensstijl past van de consument en kan samenwerken met andere toestellen. Spreken toestellen dezelfde ‘taal’, dan kunnen ze samenwerken. En die samenwerking loont, net zoals bij mensen. Interoperabiliteit vond alvast wel zijn weg in het model. Interoperabiliteit beïnvloedt volgens het model het waargenomen nut van Internet of Things bij de consument. 

Natuurlijk hecht niet iedereen evenveel belang aan dezelfde drivers en barrières. Adoptiemodellen maken vaak een onderscheid op basis van leeftijd, geslacht, woonplaats, opleidingsniveau, en andere socio-demografische factoren. Neem nu bijvoorbeeld leeftijd. Zo hechtte een oudere werknemer in de jaren negentig meer belang aan gebruiksgemak bij de beslissing om een computer op het werk te gebruiken dan jongeren (5). Guldentops ziet hier opportuniteiten voor toekomstig onderzoek.

Een blik op de toekomst

Zal de Vlaming van morgen uiteindelijk slimmer leven dankzij Internet of Things? Prognoses door verschillende experten geven een trend in stijgende aan voor Internet of Things (1) (6) (7) (8). Hoe snel we effectief automatisch melk bijbestellen of ons huis zichzelf in de gaten houdt, hangt af van onze drivers en barrières. Onderzoek naar een definitief verklarend model gebeurt niet van vandaag op morgen. Tot die tijd blijft het introduceren van Internet of Things toepassingen een hit-or-miss voor bedrijven en overheden.
