Ook met autisme stressvrij op daguitstap!

Dieren gaan bekijken in ZOO Antwerpen of terug gaan in de tijd in het Gravensteen! Iedereen kijkt uit naar deze ontspannende uitstappen waar je met het hele gezin van kan genieten. Voor heel wat Vlamingen is dit echter geen evidentie. Voor mensen met autisme zijn daguitstappen en reizen zeer stressvolle periodes. Recent onderzoek van de K.U. Leuven ontwikkelde stappenplannen die ervoor zorgen dat ook deze mensen kunnen genieten van hun vakantie!

Weg structuur! Welkom prikkels!

Stel je voor, je hebt een vrije dag en wil graag iets leuk doen. Je kiest spontaan een activiteit waar je nog niet bent geweest, want je ontdekt graag nieuwe plekken. Je springt op de trein naar de zoo van Antwerpen, koopt een ticket en beleeft een fantastische dag! Voor vele mensen met autisme lijkt dit haast een onmogelijke opdracht. Zij hebben namelijk nood aan structuur en voorspelbaarheid. Dit valt volledig weg eens zij hun vertrouwde omgeving verlaten. Daarbovenop worden ze geconfronteerd met vele onbekende gezichten, talloze geuren, geluiden... Dat vraagt allemaal veel energie. Hierdoor zullen zij deze ontspannende activiteiten vaak vermijden. Zijn ze toch dapper genoeg om de stap te wagen? Dan zullen zij vaak veel stress ervaren. In Vlaanderen krijgt toerisme voor mensen met een beperking steeds meer aandacht. Helaas worden mensen met autisme vaak vergeten. Sinds kort komt hier verandering in! In het kader van een masterproefstudie aan de K.U. Leuven werden stappenplannen ontwikkeld die kinderen met autisme kunnen gebruiken om hun bezoek voor te bereiden. Hierdoor kunnen ook deze mensen genieten van een daguitstap!

Uit de studie bleek dat kinderen met autisme zeer onrustig zijn tijdens de aanloop naar de daguitstap. Dit kan gaan van rusteloos gedrag tot buikklachten. Desondanks kijken ze uit naar deze uitstap. Tijdens de trip zelf blijkt de overvloed aan prikkels een van de grootste uitdagingen te zijn. Daarnaast ervaren ze ook veel stress voor het onbekende en hebben ze moeite om afspraken op te volgen. Dit zorgt ervoor dat deze gezinnen vaak vroeger naar huis terugkeren of zelfs helemaal niet op uitstap gaan.

Duidelijke planning en afspraken

Bij kinderen en volwassenen met autisme wordt vaak gebruik gemaakt van stappenplannen voor dagdagelijkse activiteiten. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een schema om kleren aan te doen. Welke kleren moet ik op een koude dag allemaal aandoen en in welke volgorde moet dat dan? Deze structuur en voorbereiding helpt hen om deze vaardigheid meester te worden. Maar zou dit ook kunnen helpen bij daguitstappen? Dit werd getest in het onderzoek van de K.U. Leuven. Voor vier attracties werden stappenplannen ontwikkeld, namelijk voor ZOO Antwerpen, Sunparks Oostduinkerke, Gravensteen en het Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen. Zo’n stappenplan is een uitgebreide bundel. Aan de hand van foto’s en een korte tekst wordt uitgelegd wat er tijdens de uitstap allemaal zal gebeuren. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een bezoek aan de dierentuin. Nemen we de trein of de auto? Wat moet ik allemaal doen aan de kassa? Wat is er allemaal te zien? Ook prikkels worden aangekondigd, aangezien mensen met autisme vaak gevoeliger zijn voor sterke geuren, harde geluiden,… Zo wordt op een plattegrond aangeduid waar de nijlpaarden zijn, want die kunnen nogal stinken. Daarnaast worden alle afspraken duidelijk gevisualiseerd. Vroeger was het namelijk gemakkelijker om te weten wat van jou verwacht werd in een museum. Je mocht niets aanraken en moest stil zijn. Vandaag is dat niet allemaal meer zo vanzelfsprekend. Ga je bijvoorbeeld naar het Museum voor Natuurwetenschappen? Dan zijn er skeletten opgesteld die je niet mag aanraken, maar zijn er ook dinosaurusbotten waar je net wel mee mag spelen. Voor mensen met autisme is het dan zeer moeilijk om in te schatten wat wel en niet mag. Door de duidelijke, gevisualiseerde afspraken zijn zij hierop beter voorbereid.

Hoe wordt het stappenplan ontwikkeld en gebruikt?

Om de stappenplannen op te stellen brengt de onderzoeker een bezoek aan de attractie en brengt deze volledig in kaart. Deze informatie en foto’s worden vervolgens gebundeld in een stappenplan. Daarna kunnen mensen met autisme deze gebruiken ter voorbereiding van een bezoek. Hierin worden zij volledig vrij gelaten. Het enige criteria is dat zij het volledige stappenplan tenminste 1 keer doornemen, ten laatste de avond voor hun bezoek. Hierdoor hebben zij een idee van wat hen te wachten staat. Het stappenplan geeft hen meer houvast, waardoor ook deze gezinnen kunnen genieten van een ontspannende uitstap.

Meer dan enkel stressvrij op daguitstap!

De stappenplannen werden getest door 20 gezinnen met minstens 1 kind met autisme. Dit was een immens succes! De kinderen waren minder gespannen de dagen voor de uitstap en stelden minder vragen. Ook de uitstap zelf verliep veel beter. De ouders beschreven de daguitstap als vlot, aangenaam, ontspannend en minder frustrerend. De kinderen konden beter omgaan met plotse veranderingen en volgden de gemaakte afspraken beter op. Daarnaast ondervonden ze minder last van prikkels. Één van de kinderen die naar Sunparks ging zou in normale omstandigheden nooit van de grote glijbanen durven, want daar flikkeren allerlei lichten. Dankzij de uitgebreide voorbereiding kregen zijn ouders hem bijna niet van de glijbaan!

Toerisme voor Autisme

Vanwege het succes van deze masterproef werd in juni 2018 een grootschalig project gelanceerd onder de naam ‘Toerisme voor Autisme’. Toerisme voor Autisme zet in op meer autismevriendelijk toerisme. Op de website www.toerismevoorautisme.be worden tips gegeven aan mensen met autisme, begeleiders, gidsen, uitbaters van attracties,... Mensen kunnen er ook gratis stappenplannen downloaden voor ondertussen 25 attracties in België waaronder ZOO Planckendael, Sunparks Oostduinkerke, het Gravensteen, Hidrodoe en zoveel meer! Bovendien wordt dit project binnenkort uitgebreid naar luchthavens, logies en andere attracties. Daarnaast zullen de stappenplannen ook vertaald worden naar het Frans, zodat ook franstalige mensen meer kansen krijgen en kunnen genieten van een deugddoende vakantie. Wie weet, misschien overschrijdt het project in de toekomst ook landsgrenzen en kunnen ook mensen met autisme uitkijken naar een ontspannende daguitstap in ZOO Antwerpen!
