A City in Transition, Urban Changes in Late Antiquity and the Contribution of Archaeozoology

Andere dieren in andere tijden?

Zesde eeuw na onze jaartelling, Luni. In het noordwesten van Italië bevindt zich dit kleine stadje, in voorgaande eeuwen tot in Rome bekend om haar witte marmer, goede wijn en grote kazen, nu niet meer dan een fractie van de welvarende Romeinse stad die het ooit was. Het centrum is vervallen, meerdere gebouwen zijn verlaten en enkel de kathedraal lijkt nog enige vorm van menselijke activiteit aan te trekken. Tussen de gebouwen lopen enkele varkens en een aantal schapen en geiten, die de inwoners van het stadje bijstaan met de melk, wol en het vlees dat ze te bieden hebben.

De Late Oudheid, de periode in onze geschiedenis tussen de Romeinse periode en de Middeleeuwen, te dateren tussen 200 en 800 na onze jaartelling, was een periode vol verandering. De Romeinse manier van organisatie en administratie raakte in verval, het Christendom kreeg steeds meer invloed en nieuwe volkeren namen de plaats in van de weggevallen Romeinse elite. Vijftig jaar geleden wisten we nog bijna niets over deze periode en werd het vaak afgeschreven als een ‘donkere’ periode waarin zeer weinig gebeurde. Met name dankzij de archeologie is daar nu verandering in gekomen.

Archeologie is de studie van de mensen in ons verleden. Door het onderzoeken van de materiële resten uit ons verleden, zoals de gebouwen waarin de mensen vroeger woonden of de voorwerpen die ze gebruikten, kunnen we een idee krijgen van hoe onze geschiedenis er echt uit zag. Bovendien geeft dit materiaal, vaak verkregen via opgravingen en onderzoek in de bodem, een dieper inzicht in het alledaagse leven van de mensen van vroeger. Door archeologisch onderzoek weten we steeds meer over de veranderingen die hebben plaatsgevonden in de Late Oudheid en de invloeden die deze veranderingen hadden op de mensen van toen en, uiteindelijk, op de mensen nu. Toch zijn er nog veel aspecten van deze periode waarover onzekerheid bestaat.

 

Archeozoölogie

Een van de minder onderzochte aspecten van de Late Oudheid is het gebruik van dieren in deze periode. Om dit aspect te onderzoeken werd niet gekeken naar beschrijvingen of afbeeldingen van dieren uit deze periode, maar naar de werkelijke resten van deze dieren. Het onderzoek naar deze dierlijke resten, en met name de botten die naar boven komen tijdens archeologisch onderzoek, noemt men de archeozoölogie. Niet anders dan archeologisch materiaal kunnen dierlijke resten ook informatie geven over de activiteiten die mensen vroeger uitvoerden. Dankzij de archeozoölogie kunnen we meer informatie verkrijgen over een bepaald aspect van ons verleden en daarom het totaalbeeld van onze geschiedenis verder aanvullen.

 

Zo kunnen we door onderzoek naar de dierlijke resten uit een bepaalde stad, bijvoorbeeld Luni, meer informatie verkrijgen over de dieren die hier aanwezig waren en de redenen waarvoor ze door de mens gehouden en gebruikt werden. Uit Luni werd een selectie van 1,674 dierlijke fragmenten onderzocht om meer informatie te verzamelen over het dierlijk aspect van de Laat-Antieke stad. Er werd onderzocht welke (huis)dieren er binnen de stad gehouden werden en welke dieren gebruikt werden voor transport en vervoer. Daarnaast werd er ook gekeken welke dieren door de mens geslacht zijn en dus door de mensen gegeten werden.

Deel van het onderzochte archeozoölogisch materiaal uit Luni

Naast specifiek onderzoek van een bepaalde plaats kan ook informatie verzameld worden over het gebruik van dieren in een bepaalde regio, door verschillend materiaal van verschillende archeologische sites met elkaar te vergelijken. Om meer te weten te komen over de Late Oudheid in Italië werd het dierlijk materiaal van verschillende plaatsen in centraal Italië onderzocht en vergeleken om te zien welke dieren er in de Romeinse periode en in de Late Oudheid door de mens gebruikt werden. Er werd onderzocht welke diersoorten het meest voorkomen op de verschillende plaatsen en of er veranderingen te zien zijn in het gebruik van dieren doorheen de tijd. Door het vergelijken van het materiaal uit de Romeinse tijd en de Late Oudheid kon gekeken worden of de veranderingen tussen de twee periodes ook hebben gezorgd voor verandering in het gebruik van verschillende diersoorten.

 

Een voorkeur voor schapen en geiten

Een van de resultaten van het onderzoek was dat er in de Late Oudheid een toename was in het gebruik van schapen en geiten ten opzichte van de Romeinse periode. Het lijkt erop dat de veranderingen in de Late Oudheid niet enkel invloed hadden op aspecten zoals administratie en stedenbouw, maar dat er ook een verandering was in het gebruik van bepaalde diersoorten. Voornamelijk schapen en geiten lijken in deze periode een grotere voorkeur te hebben. Veranderingen in verschillende aspecten van de samenleving hebben er dus voor gezorgd dat ook de veeteelt en de voedselvoorziening veranderingen onderging.

 

Door de studie van het dierlijk materiaal uit ons verleden kan een inzicht verkregen worden in alledaagse aspecten van vroegere tijden en op de manier waarop de mens vroeger leefde. Onderzoek van materiaal uit een periode die minder onderzocht en minder gekend is, kan onze kennis van deze periode verbreden en geeft ons de kans om de veranderingen waarmee de mensen van toen te maken hadden beter te begrijpen.
