Fostering Creativity in the Organisation: The impact of management instruments and office structures on the creativity of invent

Creativiteit, het humane aspect van innovatie, komt steeds meer en meer in de belangstelling te staan. Hoe kunnen organisaties de creatieve kant van hun leden doen ontwaken en optimaal benutten? Wat is de juiste omgeving om radicale en revolutionaire creativiteit te  creëren en te stimuleren? Dit is een vraag die veel managers, organisatieleden en werkgevers zich stellen. Woordvoerders van grote organisaties, management guru’s en academici bevelen verschillende tactieken aan zoals onder andere: creëer een open werkomgeving, motiveer uw teams, beloon goeie ideeën, geef vrije tijd aan uw werknemers, stimuleer conversaties,…

Het doel van deze thesis  is om enkele van de meest genoemde tactieken onder de loep te nemen. Eerst kijken we naar de literatuur en de onderzoeken die in het verleden zijn gemaakt. Deze studies laten ons begrijpen hoe de verschillende tactieken en omgevingen een invloed hebben op de creativiteit van de individuen in de organisatie en op de creativiteit die ontstaat uit interactie tussen deze individuen. Door het ondervragen van uitvinders over geheel België via een telefoonsurvey gaan we kijken in welke omgeving ze actief zijn en hoe dat hun omgeving een impact zou kunnen hebben op de waarde van hun uitvindingen.  Zo wordt de openheid van de werkomgeving onderzocht en ook de aanwezigheid van ruimtes waar informele conversaties kunnen plaats vinden (koffielokaal, bar, restaurant,…) Ook telewerk en het houden van team-building evenementen worden in kaart gebracht. Speciaal wordt er gekeken naar hoe de leden in de organisaties vrij zijn om hun eigen ideeën naar voor te schuiven.

Argumenten gemaakt in de literatuur worden bevestigd of verworpen op basis van een analyse van descriptieve statistieken en meerdere regressies van twee variabelen die de creatieve waarde van een uitvinding meten. Opmerkelijk komt telewerk als een positieve variabele als eerste naar voor, ondanks dat de theoretische literatuur dit grotendeels tegensprak. De creativiteit van een uitvinder kan positief beïnvloedt worden door telewerk aangezien ze zich dan zonder enige interrupties en afleidingen van andere werknemers volledig kunnen storten op hun project.  Het geven van vrije tijd, autonomie en middelen scoort eveneens zeer positief. Ook de openheid van een organisatie scoort relatief goed voor het behalen van een patent voor een uitvinding. De andere onderzochte variabelen geven geen relevante resultaten. Hoewel de onderzochte sample nog niet groot genoeg is om wetenschappelijk bewijs te geven, werpen de resultaten licht op de link tussen creativiteit en de werkomgeving. Op deze manier laat de thesis de noodzaak zien dat een stimulerende werkomgeving een nodig, maar niet voldoende, component is om creativiteit te stimuleren en ondersteunen.
