Tussen twee gebarentaalwoordenboeken: een Vlaamse scriptie met een engagement in Tanzania

“Of ik een gebarentaalwoordenboek in West-Tanzania wilde samenstellen? Daar heb ik geen seconde over getwijfeld.” En dus vertrok Ellen Heymans in 2015 naar het stadje Kigoma waar ze uiteindelijk tien maanden zou wonen. Een jaar later vergeleek Ellen in haar masterthesis het woordenboek voor de Vlaamse Gebarentaal met het woordenboek voor de West-Tanzaniaanse Gebarentaal, dat ze samenstelde met de Kigoomse dovengemeenschap.

Ellen onderzocht de gelijkenissen en verschillen tussen beide woordenboeken. “Al snel merkte ik op dat beide projecten zowel gelijkenissen als verschillen vertoonden. De gelijkenissen bevonden zich vooral op lexicografisch niveau, dus op het niveau van hoe een woordenboek wordt samengesteld. Wanneer beide projecten van elkaar verschilden, volgde dit vooral uit de maatschappelijke context,” legt Ellen uit.  “Het woordenboek voor de Vlaamse Gebarentaal werd bijvoorbeeld gepubliceerd op de gratis te raadplegen website http://gebaren.ugent.be/ met het oog op een zo groot mogelijk doelpubliek. In West-Tanzania hadden we dezelfde doelstelling, namelijk zoveel mogelijk mensen bereiken en dus hebben we 100 woordenboeken gedrukt en uitgedeeld. In het computerloze Kigoma zouden we ons doel namelijk helemaal mislopen als we ook hadden gekozen voor een website. Onze motivatie was dus dezelfde, maar doordat de maatschappij in Tanzania er heel anders uitziet, verschilt de uitwerking.”

 

WAT WE VAN ELKAAR KUNNEN LEREN

“In de komende jaren wil ik zeker nog verder werken aan het verbeteren en uitbreiden van het woordenboek in Kigoma,” zo gaat Ellen verder. “Daarom is het belangrijk te onderzoeken of we inspiratie mogen halen uit gelijkaardige projecten in andere landen. Uit mijn onderzoek blijkt dat er meer parallellen te trekken zijn dan eerst gedacht. Dit maakt dat we zeker kunnen leren uit het Vlaamse en andere projecten op voorwaarde dat we nooit de Tanzaniaanse context uit het oog verliezen. Dit betekent dat we van elkaar kunnen leren.”

“Wanneer je beide projecten naast elkaar legt, valt op dat medewerkers in Vlaanderen en Kigoma zich zeer gelijkaardige vragen hebben gesteld, bijvoorbeeld: wat doen we met hiaten of ‘leemtes’ in de woordenschat (of eerder gebarenschat)? Net als gesproken talen ontstaan gebarentalen op natuurlijke wijze. Het zijn levende talen die groeien en veranderen doorheen de tijd. Toen de fiets of auto werd uitgevonden, was er nood aan een woord voor deze nieuwe concepten. Doordat levende talen elke dag worden gebruikt, worden deze leemtes spontaan ingevuld door de gebruikers van de taal. Ook de Vlaamse en West-Tanzaniaanse Gebarentaal hebben een gebaar voor concepten als fiets of auto omdat doven deze talen gebruiken.”

“Er zijn ook domeinen waarin gebarentalen heel weinig gebruikt worden vanwege het stigma ten opzichte van doven en hun taal. In West-Tanzania willen doven graag een beroepsopleiding volgen (zoals elektriciteit, lassen of stofferen), maar doordat geen enkele dove in de regio dit beroep uitoefent, bestaan er geen gebaren voor dit jargon. En zolang er geen domeinspecfieke gebaren bestaan, kan ook geen toegankelijke opleiding worden ingericht. Dat is een vicieuze cirkel. Hoe los je dit op?” vraagt Ellen zich af. “Dat is een heel moeilijke vraag waar we op dat ogenblik geen antwoord op vonden.” Door het schrijven aan haar scriptie leerde Ellen dat de Vlaamse Gebarentaal eenzelfde probleem had voor woordenschat over domeinen zoals wiskunde of computer. Dit werd opgelost door een hiatenproject waarbij de ‘gaten’ in de taal op natuurlijke wijze werden opgevuld zonder gebaren uit te vinden. “Gebaren uitvinden is niet oké. Gebarentalen zijn niet uitgevonden, maar op natuurlijke wijze ontstaan. Dat moet je respecteren.”

 

MAATSCHAPPELIJKE BIJDRAGE

Ook maatschappelijk gezien is het gebarentaalwoordenboek in Kigoma een belangrijk statement. In Tanzania heerst een groot stigma over doofheid en wordt het gebruik van gebarentaal sterk onderdrukt. Slechts 3%-5% van de Tanzaniaanse doven krijgt enige vorm van scholing of opleiding. “Dat is schrikwekkend laag: onderwijs is een basisrecht!” stelt Ellen. “Het gebarentaalwoordenboek erkent het bestaan van de taal, maakt de taal zichtbaar en verhoogt de status ervan. Hiermee hopen we dat de lokale gemeenschap inziet dat er niets mis is met doof zijn. Het betekent gewoon dat je niet kan horen, dat is alles. Verder kan je perfect zelfstandig leven, een job uitoefenen en op die manier bijdragen aan de maatschappij. Je moet er alleen de kans toe krijgen en die kans begint bij onderwijs.”

Het gebrek aan onderwijs voor doven is iets dat Ellen tijdens haar verblijf sterk aangreep. “West-Tanzania is een extreem arme regio. Wanneer een familie niet voldoende geld heeft om alle kinderen naar school te sturen, kan ik ergens wel begrijpen dat ze hun centen niet willen ‘vergokken’ aan hun doof kind, zeker gezien de vooroordelen over doofheid: nog te vaak wordt gedacht dat doof zijn gelijk staat aan ‘dom’ zijn. Maar dat is natuurlijk onterecht.”

Om dove kinderen toch toegang te geven tot kwalitatief onderwijs richtte Ellen samen met drie jonge Gentenaars de vzw Klimvis (www.klimvis.be) op. Klimvis zet in op inclusief onderwijs waarbij dove leerlingen les krijgen in gebarentaal. “Het is mooi om te zien hoe mijn studies elkaar vinden in dit maatschappelijk engagement. Met Klimvis gaan we een boeiende reis tegemoet waarin we ongetwijfeld zelf ook veel zullen leren: over gebarentalen en dovenculturen, over noord-zuidwerking en ook over hoe we zelf ons steentje kunnen bijdragen aan deze wereld.”

 

In 2016 behaalde Ellen Heymans een Postgraduaat Internationale Samenwerking Noord-Zuid aan de Howest/VIVES Hogeschool in Kortrijk. In 2017 rondde Ellen haar studies als Master in het Tolken Nederlands – Duits – Vlaamse Gebarentaal af aan de KULeuven Campus Antwerpen. Sinds januari 2017 is ze voorzitter en noordzuidwerker van de door haarzelf opgerichte vzw Klimvis.
