Ontwikkeling van een kostenefficiënte lensmatrixfolie op basis van inkjetprinten ter optimalisatie van de efficiëntie en het stralingspatroon van gepixelde OLED's

Inkjet geprinte OLED-lenzen brengen licht in de duisternis

‘Het diepste en zwartste zwart’. U heeft het ongetwijfeld al gehoord of zelfs mogen beleven: de ongeëvenaarde kleuren van de nieuwste OLED-tv’s. De OLED-technologie staat aan de vooravond van haar wereldwijde doorbraak. Niet alleen in de displaytechnologie, maar ook in de verlichtingsindustrie. Dat de OLED de gloeilamp van de 21ste eeuw wordt staat buiten kijf, maar vooraleer het zover is dienen nog een aantal hindernissen genomen te worden waaraan Vlaams onderzoek een belangrijk steentje zal bijdragen.

Wat is een OLED, er zijn toch voldoende alternatieven?

De OLED of organische lichtgevende diode is een halfgeleiderlichtbron gebaseerd op elektroluminescentie: een specifiek polymeer wordt van elektrische stroom voorzien, waardoor licht wordt uitgezonden. Dit is niets nieuws. Eenvoudig gesteld gaat hetzelfde principe schuil achter de alomtegenwoordige led. Het geheim van de OLED zit in het feit dat deze in tegenstelling tot de led geen puntbron, maar een oppervlaktestraler is. Eén OLED kan zo tientallen vierkante centimeters verlichten. Daarnaast laat de dunne, flexibele structuur toe om complexe, artistieke en bovendien lichte en zelfs plooibare armaturen te ontwerpen.

Flexibele OLED's en artistieke OLED-armaturen

Maar veruit het belangrijkste voordeel is de hoge theoretische efficiëntie. De OLED wordt namelijk gekenmerkt door een intern rendement van ca. 100 % of met andere woorden: iedere elektrische ladingsdrager die men toevoegt aan de OLED wordt omgezet in een lichtdeeltje. Onder laboratoriumomstandigheden is men er zo in geslaagd om het lichtrendement van de led te overschrijden, waarmee de OLED zijn grootste concurrent in zijn schaduw verdringt.

Waar kan de OLED nog van dienst zijn?

De voorgenoemde voordelen maken de OLED zeer aantrekkelijk binnen de displaytechnologie, maar er is meer! Maar liefst een kwart van de totale elektriciteitsconsumptie in Europa wordt toegeschreven aan verlichting. Hoewel verlichting een basisbehoefte is, blijft dit toch een aanzienlijk percentage. Het reduceren van dit aandeel is daarom geen onbelangrijke doelstelling in de strijd tegen de opwarming van de aarde. Dit hoge elektriciteitsverbruik valt te wijten aan de minder efficiëntere lichtbronnen, zoals gloei-, halogeen-, en TL-lampen die nog al te vaak worden aangewend. De Europese Commissie berekende dat het overschakelen naar energie-efficiënte verlichting, zoals bijvoorbeeld de OLED, de Europese energieconsumptie jaarlijks met meer dan 40 TWh kan terugdringen. Dit komt overeen met de helft van het jaarlijkse elektriciteitsverbruik in België. Hierdoor kunnen 10 (kern)energiecentrales met een vermogen van 500 MW gesloten worden, waardoor de CO2-emissie met 15 miljoen ton per jaar vermindert.

Geen licht zonder schaduw

De OLED biedt zovele voordelen, waar wacht men dan nog op? Terecht, maar zo simpel is het helaas niet. Deze lichtbron kampt namelijk met een aantal moeilijkheden.

Zo is een standaard OLED, zonder optimalisaties, niet aangewezen voor verlichtingsdoeleinden. Omwille van diverse verliesmechanismen binnenin verlaat slechts 20 % van het gegeneerde licht effectief de OLED. De overige 80 % wordt omgezet in warmte. Eén van de voornaamste verliesmechanismen is totale interne reflectie. Dit fysische verschijnsel wordt in de vezeloptica gunstig toegepast om lichtsignalen over grote afstanden te transporteren. Voor de OLED is dit echter een ware nachtmerrie.

Daarnaast wordt de OLED gekenmerkt door een breed stralingspatroon. Echter bij verlichting wenst men een lokaal gebied, zoals bijvoorbeeld een tafel, sterk te belichten zonder de gebruiker te verblinden. Het uitgestraalde licht dient daarom gebundeld te worden.

Voor beide problemen werden in het verleden reeds diverse oplossingen gevonden, maar de complexiteit en kostprijs maken de meeste ervan onbruikbaar voor productie op grote schaal. Lenzen vormen mogelijk de meest adequate oplossing en genieten daarom wereldwijde belangstelling. Het is overigens een relatief eenvoudige technologie waarmee men vertrouwd is in verscheidene andere elektronische componenten.

Bijdrage van Vlaams onderzoek

Zoals u wellicht al vermoedde, zijn hier zeer kleine lenzen in het micrometer- tot millimeterbereik vereist. Hoewel de werking en implementatie relatief eenvoudig zijn, kampt de lensproductie vandaag de dag met complexiteiten en een hoge kostprijs per oppervlakte-eenheid.

Zo komen de meeste lenzen voort uit een nauwkeurige maar dure matrijs. Een matrijs is echter een inflexibele oplossing. Indien de lenzenrangschikking en –vorm wijzigen, dient telkens een nieuwe matrijs geproduceerd te worden.

InkjetprinterNet zoals in andere sectoren gaan ook hier steeds meer stemmen op voor additieve productietechnieken. In dit geval wordt geen 3D-printer bedoeld, maar een toestel dat ieder van ons dagelijks gebruikt en in huis heeft: de inkjetprinter. De conventionele thuisprinter is gevuld met kleureninkt, maar indien men experimenteert met functionele inkten ontpopt zich een wereld van mogelijkheden. Dit onderzoek had daarom tot doel om het inkjetprinten van lenzen en de mogelijkheden tot massaproductie nader te onderzoeken. Een jaar van uitvoerig onderzoek heeft uiteindelijk geleid tot de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe lensproductietechniek met veel potentieel.

Allereerst worden op een flexibele folie lensreservoirs geprint met een solvent (1, 2). Hierin worden vervolgens vloeibare polymeerdruppeltjes eveneens inkjet geprint (3) om zo het clusteren met naburige lensdruppeltjes te voorkomen. Hierdoor kunnen de microlenzen dichterbij elkaar geplaatst worden dat tot een hogere OLED-efficiëntie leidt. Ten slotte wordt het lenspolymeer uitgehard onder invloed van uv-licht (4).

De ontwikkelde lensmatrixfolieDe resultaten tonen aan dat na implementatie van de ontwikkelde lensfolie het rendement van de OLED met 22 % stijgt. Er is hierbij echter nog veel ruimte voor verbetering. Indien de beschreven optimalisatieroutes in de scriptie opgevolgd worden, wordt verwacht om een efficiëntiestijging van meer dan 50 % te behalen dat noodzakelijk is om de concurrentie het hoofd te bieden.

De lensfolie in dit werk kwam uitsluitend tot stand via inkjetprinten. Het ontwikkelde productieproces onderscheidt zich door het beperkt aantal handelingen en productiestappen, zijn eenvoud, lage kosten en enorme flexibiliteit. Door het eenvoudig wijzigen van het printprogramma kan namelijk een volledig nieuwe lenzenrangschikking en –vorm bekomen worden. Daarnaast wordt door het gecontroleerd en druppelsgewijs printen van materiaal efficiënt met grondstoffen opgesprongen.

 

 

Vooruitblik

Het verhaal stopt hier echter niet. Naast het gebruik bij OLED’s tonen de elementen uit dit onderzoek eveneens potentieel binnen andere domeinen van de opto-elektronica en microchemie, zoals in vezeloptica, fotovoltaïsche cellen, biochips, microreactoren en vele anderen.

Dit onderzoek werd uitgevoerd binnen de Functional Materials Engineering (FME) onderzoeksgroep, onder leiding van prof. dr. ir. Wim Deferme, aan het Instituut voor Materiaalonderzoek (IMO-IMOMEC) van de UHasselt.
