We leven in een wereld vol muziek: in de auto, op het werk, in de winkel enz. Een normale dag zonder muziek lijkt tegenwoordig bijna onmogelijk. Toch zijn maar weinig mensen in staat om tonen of klanken te herkennen én te benoemen zonder gebruik van enige referentie. Mensen met deze vaardigheid beschikken over een absoluut gehoor. Het is essentieel om de muziekbeleving van deze mensen te begrijpen. Daardoor wordt het bijvoorbeeld mogelijk om hulp te bieden via een aangepast hoortoestel. Helaas is er hierover nog veel te weinig gekend. Dit onderzoek legt een nieuwe basis voor het beter begrijpen van absoluut gehoor en het genot van muziek in het algemeen.  

Doorheen de jaren deden reeds vele onderzoekers pogingen om het ontstaan, de expressie en de vele andere facetten van het AG te beschrijven. Uit deze onderzoeken blijkt dat niet alleen meerdere factoren, zoals de beginleeftijd van de muzikale opleiding, genetica, etnische afkomst,… een rol spelen in het tot uiting komen van een AG, maar ook dat er binnen de AG-bezitters zelf veel variatie is. Deze variatie is mede te wijten aan het feit dat er geen uniformiteit is in enerzijds de definiëring van dit fenomeen en anderzijds in de test-, scorings- en interpretatiemethoden. Alles staat of valt echter met een eenduidige definitie van deze vaardigheid. Pas dan kan dit fenomeen onderzocht worden en onderzoeken onderling vergeleken worden. Daarom werd in dit onderzoek eerst de reeds bestaande literatuur over deze vaardigheid in kaart gebracht. Op basis daarvan werd een poging voor een alomvattende definitie opgezet. Daarnaast werden parameters beschreven aan de hand waarvan een test opgesteld kan worden om zo het AG op een betrouwbare en valide manier te kunnen toetsen. Ten slotte werd een eigen onderzoek uitgevoerd. Aan de hand van dit verkennend onderzoek werd gepoogd om antwoorden te vinden op de vragen ‘is een AG een ‘all-or-nothing’ vaardigheid?’, ‘heeft de beginleeftijd van de muzikale opleiding een invloed op de ontwikkeling van een AG?’ en ‘komt een AG vaker voor bij professionele dan amateur muzikanten?’.

De proefgroep bestond uit 39 participanten die allemaal in staat waren om klanken via notennamen te benoemen en van zichzelf dachten over een AG te beschikken. Hun scores volgden elkaar systematisch op, waardoor er geen duidelijke indicatie was dat dit een ‘all-or-nothing’ vaardigheid is. AG kan dus eerder geplaatst worden op een schaal met verschillende gradaties gaande van minimaal, matig, goed tot bijzonder goed ontwikkeld AG. Slecht één participant voldeed aan de zelf opgestelde criteria, die rekening houden met de meest gehanteerde definitie, en kan bijgevolg beschouwd worden als iemand met een AG. Deze persoon was blind, wat mogelijk een invloed heeft op de ontwikkeling van een AG. Hij vertelde dat hij als hij gaat wandelen elk omgevingsgeluid met een notennaam kan benoemen. Zo gaf hij zonder enige twijfel aan dat kikkers kwaken op een toonhoogte re.

Verder was er geen correlatie te zien tussen de beginleeftijd van de muzikale opleiding en de scores van de participanten. Volgens dit onderzoek zou iedereen die op om het even welke leeftijd gestart is met zijn muzikale opleiding en wie de juiste genen bezit, in staat zijn om een AG te ontwikkelen.

Tussen professionele- en amateurmusici waren er eveneens geen significante verschillen op te merken.  

Verder onderzoek naar deze materie is aangewezen aangezien er nog vele aspecten over deze vaardigheid ongekend zijn.

 

Dit onderzoek toonde aan dat AG wel bestaat maar zeldzaam is. Onze muziekbeleving is dus erg relatief. Verder onderzoek, ook in samenspraak met de neurologie is nodig om verder te onderzoeken hoe mensen met een AG tonen én klanken op centraal niveau verwerken, wat de verschillen zijn met andere muzikanten en welke invloed dit heeft op de hoortoestelaanpassing.
