Image removed.Dit jaar vierden mijn ouders hun veertig jarig jubileum. Voor mijn generatie is het de vraag of een Robijnen huwelijk haalbaar is. Mijn zussen zijn allebei gescheiden en hebben samengestelde gezinnen gevormd. Mijn vriend en ik kiezen bewust voor het ongehuwd samenwonen. Tegenwoordig noemen ze dat met een mooi woord ‘cohabitatie’. Verschilt onze relatie van een huwelijksrelatie? Geven wij eenzelfde betekenis aan de relatie, of hebben we een ander beeld van hoe een relatie moet worden vormgegeven? En hoe zit het met het geluksgevoel?

 

Mijn directe omgeving is een goed voorbeeld van het feit dat relatievorming tegenwoordig geen eenduidig gegeven is. In westerse samenlevingen wordt in toenemende mate waarde gehecht aan individuele autonomie en zelfontplooiing. Het uitspreken van de trouwbelofte ‘ik beloof je trouw te blijven in goede en in slechte dagen, in gezondheid en ziekte, tot de dood ons scheidt’ impliceert een onvoorwaardelijke verantwoordelijkheid voor de ander. Voor sommige koppels is dit net een brug te ver. Zij verkiezen cohabitatie boven het huwelijk.

Ik heb mij verdiept in de verschillen en overeenkomsten van net-gehuwden en net-samenwonenden in Vlaanderen tussen de achttien en veertig jaar. In het bijzonder heb ik onderzocht hoe zij hun relatie vormgeven op het gebied van financiële en sociale gezamenlijkheid. Ik heb een relatietypologie opgesteld op basis van drie componenten van gezamenlijkheid: het financieel beheer (bundelen van inkomsten), het netwerkoverlap (gezamenlijke vrienden) en het bezoeken van vrienden. Tot slot heb ik onderzocht hoe tevreden net-gehuwden en net-samenwonenden zijn met hun relatie. Wie zijn meer tevreden met hun relatie, net-samenwonenden of net-gehuwden?

 

Het ‘volledig gezamenlijk relatietype’

De meest intense en verscheurende pijn die ik in mijn leven heb ervaren, is de pijn van een gebroken hart. Met het verbreken van de relatie was ik een deel van mezelf verloren. Ik had een stukje van mijn hart aan hem gegeven en hij ging ermee vandoor. Daarnaast verloor ik mijn huis dat lange tijd mijn thuis was en een aantal gezamenlijke vrienden. Dat was het moment dat ik een belangrijke levensles heb geleerd: Liefde is een risicovolle investering. Hoe meer je investeert in een relatie, hoe groter de gevolgen zijn wanneer de relatie wordt beëindigd. Liefde is tegelijkertijd het mooiste wat er is. De kwetsbaarheid die ermee gepaard gaat, is juist wat het zo mooi maakt. Het geeft betekenis en zin aan het leven. Of zoals Mumford and Sons het zo mooi zeggen in het lied Awake My Soul: ‘Where you invest your love, you invest your life.’

 

“Liefde is een risicovolle investering”

 

Bij het aangaan van een liefdesrelatie worden koppels geconfronteerd met de vraag in welke mate ze hun leven met elkaar willen verweven. Zowel net-gehuwden als net-samenwonenden maken de afweging tussen persoonlijke en gezamenlijke noden. Ze maken echter een andere balans op, zo blijkt uit het onderzoek. Net-gehuwden geven over het algemeen de voorkeur aan meer gezamenlijkheid in hun relatie dan net-samenwonenden. Zij hebben vaker gemeenschappelijke vrienden, gaan doorgaans samen op bezoek bij vrienden en kiezen vaker voor het volledig bundelen van hun inkomsten. Kortom, zij kiezen vaker een volledig gezamenlijk relatietype dan net-samenwonenden.

Waarom verschillen relaties van net-gehuwden en net-samenwonenden in de mate van gezamenlijkheid? Daar kan op basis van het onderzoek geen sluitende verklaring voor worden geven. Wel blijkt dat een aantal selectiefactoren – individuele kenmerken van mensen – zoals het hebben van traditionele opvattingen, een rol spelen. Wie huwt, heeft doorgaans meer traditionele opvattingen én meer kans op een ‘volledig gezamenlijk relatietype’. Naast selectiefactoren speelt de mate van commitment een rol. Koppels die zeker zijn over hun relatie en al langere tijd samen zijn, kiezen doorgaans voor een ‘volledig gezamenlijk relatietype’.

 

Trouwen maakt gelukkig

Ik heb nooit gedroomd over een witte jurk en een prachtige bruiloft. Nee, trouwen is nooit een ‘life goal’ voor mij geweest. Nu is trouwen niet meer zo hip tegenwoordig. Waar mijn ouders met 21 jaar het boterbriefje gingen halen, is het anno 2017 niet meer zo vanzelfsprekend. Trouwen is tegenwoordig een bewuste keuze. Je trouwt niet meer omdat het moet, je trouwt omdat je het echt wil. In mijn onderzoek was ik nieuwsgierig naar de vraag of koppels die voor het huwelijk kiezen, meer tevreden zijn over hun relatie?

Hoewel net-gehuwden en net-samenwonenden zeer tevreden zijn over hun relatie, blijkt uit het onderzoek dat net-gehuwde koppels meer tevreden zijn dan net-samenwonenden. Net-gehuwden scoren gemiddeld 6,7 op zeven en net-samenwonenden gemiddeld een 6,5 (een minimaal verschil). Koppels met een ‘volledig gezamenlijk relatietype’ zijn bovendien meer tevreden over hun relatie dan koppels met een mindere mate van gezamenlijkheid.

 

Zijn net-gehuwden meer tevreden met hun relatie, omdat zij vaker kiezen voor een volledig gezamenlijk relatietype? Dit blijkt niet het geval te zijn. Het verschil in gezamenlijkheid tussen net-gehuwden en net-samenwonenden is niet van belang voor het verklaren van het verschil in relationele tevredenheid. Dit wijst op een cohabitation gap: net-samenwonenden zijn minder tevreden met hun relatie dan net-gehuwden ongeacht de mate van gezamenlijkheid, commitment of andere specifieke karakteristieken zoals traditionele opvattingen.

 

Wonderen bestaan

Conclusie: wie trouwt geeft de voorkeur aan een gezamenlijk relatietype en is meer tevreden over de relatie. Waarom het grotere geluksgevoel bij net-samenwonenden wegblijft, moet worden onderzocht.

Volgens mijn onderzoek ben ik gedoemd. Ik ben niet getrouwd en mijn vriend en ik hebben geen volledige gezamenlijkheid ingebouwd in de relatie. Ondanks dit alles heb ik vertrouwen in onze relatie. Ik gooi het op het feit dat ik Nederlands ben en de resultaten niet op ons van toepassing zijn. En bovendien, het feit dat we bijna tien jaar samen zijn en ruim 6 jaar samenwonen is bewijs dat de wonderen de wereld nog niet uit zijn.
