Medische beeldvorming: voor velen een stap in de duisternis?

Komt een man bij de dokter.
De man heeft wat last van buikpijn. Na enkele vragen besluit de dokter dat hij niet veel wijzer is geworden en zegt ‘Ga maar even langs in het ziekenhuis, voor een CT’tje’. De man zegt ‘Goed’ en gaat naar huis. Wanneer hij de volgende dag op de afdeling radiologie en medische beeldvorming aankomt, maakt hij zich zorgen. ‘Wat is een CT?’, ‘Doet dat pijn?’, ‘Heb ik kanker?’.

In bovenstaand scenario kan ieder van ons zich wel vinden: als familielid, kennis, partner van de patiënt of als patiënt zelf. Martijn Laridon ging in zijn scriptie onder andere op zoek naar de vragen die leven bij patiënten, meer bepaald bij gehospitaliseerde patiënten. Wat zijn vragen die hen bezighouden? Wensen ze eigenlijk wel informatie? Kreeg men voldoende informatie voor aankomst op de afdeling radiologie en medische beeldvorming?

Informatie. Overal?
We worden dagelijks overspoeld met informatie. Wanneer het echter om medische informatie gaat en het persoonlijk wordt, blijken er tekorten. In deze scriptie blijkt de nood aan informatie bij patiënten op de afdeling radiologie en medische beeldvorming groot te zijn. Deze nood wordt echter onvoldoende ingelast. Het is nochtans een van de basisfundamenten volgens de rechten van de patiënt.

Enkele cijfers.
In het AZ Sint-Jan campus Brugge werden 100 mensen bevraagd. Men stond ingepland voor vier verschillende onderzoeken: klassieke RX, Computed Tomography (CT)-scan, echografie en Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Van deze 100 patiënten gaf 64% aan geen informatie te hebben ontvangen, voorafgaand aan het onderzoek. Nochtans wil men informatie: uit dit onderzoek blijkt namelijk dat 71% van de bevraagde patiënten graag informatie zou ontvangen. Patiënten die wél geïnformeerd waren, kregen deze informatie via hun arts, een verpleegkundige, hun huisarts, hun familie of het internet. Verder kon 22% niet correct aangeven welk onderzoek ze zouden ondergaan. Eén vijfde zit met andere woorden gewoon te wachten en weet niet eens waarvoor.

Wachten. Vragen. Antwoorden?
Tijdens dat wachten stelt men zich vragen. Welke vragen dat zijn wordt in deze scriptie verder toegelicht alsook op een wetenschappelijke manier beantwoord. Wanneer de patiënten met andere woorden hun beurt afwachten, kunnen ze met het lezen van deze scriptie antwoorden vinden op hun vragen. ‘Zijn stralingen gevaarlijk?’, ‘Krijg ik kanker van stralingen?’, ‘Ben ik na dit onderzoek radioactief?’ of ‘Ik heb claustrofobie, wat nu?’ zijn maar enkele van de vragen die patiënten zich stellen.

Jong of oud, iedereen wil informatie?
Opvallen in deze studie is dat ongeveer 75% van alle vragen gesteld worden door patiënten die jonger zijn dan 60 jaar. Dit terwijl ongeveer 70% van de bevraagde patiënten ouder is dan 60 jaar. Dit houdt dus in dat het voornamelijk jongere mensen zijn die de vragen stellen, maar dat vooral oudere mensen (60 +) onderzoeken ondergaan. Dit gegeven, samen met de aankomende vergrijzing, zou kunnen leiden tot een erg grote en mondige populatie patiënten die nood heeft aan informatie. Efficiënte en kwaliteitsvolle informatie.

Wat nu?
Patiënten stellen zich vragen en willen hier ook een antwoord op krijgen. Ze willen met andere woorden geïnformeerd worden. Waar kan de patiënt deze informatie verkrijgen? Is het aan de huisarts om deze informatie mee te delen, de verpleegkundige op de afdeling of de radioloog? In deze scriptie pleit men alvast voor een algemeen geïntegreerde visie rond informatie aan (gehospitaliseerde) patiënten. Komt een dokter tot bij de (gewone) man?
